The playground located behind the old Holy Ghost School at 230 Coldwater Road, Rochester NY was built in 1987 by local families right here in the Gates community. They all worked together to create this beautiful space for children to play and families to gather. This playground has been open to the community for decades and will continue to be open to the public.
In June 2021, we had a mother come visit our center with her beautiful little girl, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. We gave them a tour of our facility, and then it was time to go out to our playground. We explained to the mother that our playground is not wheelchair accessible. The mother went on to say, “that is ok, most playgrounds around here aren’t, she can just sit on the side and watch”. That statement broke our hearts! No child should EVER have to sit out while all their friends are playing, and no parent should have to accept this as a reality for his/her child. We decided that we needed to come up with a solution!
We reached out to a company called Play by Design, out of Ithaca NY that builds custom wooden playgrounds. We talked about various options. Should we just update our existing playground or build a new one? We decided to refurbish our current playground and then add an additional fully inclusive playground alongside it! This way we can honor the past and embrace the future. A few months later we organized a Design Day, where all the children got to draw pictures of their ideal playground. The designer took their drawings and created a playground that incor After our encounter with this little girl and her mother, we reached out to a company called Plporated so many of their ideas. However, this playground is going to be expensive, over $1,000,000.
This playground will be a space for all families to gather and all children to play side by side while using their imaginations. It will be like no other playground in the Rochester area. It will include the following and so much more:· We-Go-Swing· We-Go-Round· Double wide track around the entire space for people to walk and/or children to ride tricycles.· Low-Hanging monkey bars· Several wheelchair accessible picnic tables· Ramps throughout the entire playground· Wheelchair accessible stage where children can put on plays with seating for the audience.· Art center including an easel for children to paint outside.· Building center with outdoor blocks so children can build whatever they imagine.· Fully inclusive rocket ship· Fully inclusive pirate ship· Communication panel for children who are non-verbal to communicate with friends· Various instruments· Sensory tunnel for sensory integration
To fund this very expensive project, we realize that our little fundraisers, craft fairs and 50/50 raffles, are not going to be enough. We need to be able to apply for grants and reach out to corporate sponsors. To do so, we needed to become a 501(c)3 (tax exempt organization). Prior to applying for tax exempt status, we had several things we needed to do:
· We had the playground property subdivided from the rest of the property so it could be its own entity, and eventually be gifted to the Town of Gates as another one of their parks.
· We created a new corporation called Imagination Playground, Inc.
· On May 12th, we received a letter from the IRS that we now have 501(c)3 status.
.
After two years of waiting, we can finally move forward with grant writing and fundraising. This is the part where we need your help. Just as the original playground was built by this community, it is going to take every person in this community to make this dream a reality. Our hope is to have this playground built by the Fall of 2024.
We need your help! Please, please, please, share this information with ANYONE you know who would be willing to help. We are looking for big corporate sponsors. Please reach out to your employers and see if they would be willing to help. There are several ways to get involved:
· Purchase an engraved brick
· Become a sponsor
· Purchase a piece of equipment
· Make a monetary donation of any kind
· Participate in our upcoming fundraisers
· Help out with the actual build (Play by Design will reimburse us labor costs for anyone willing to volunteer their time and talents).
